If I don't care for the part but for the board, I use a very sharp and fine pitch
cutter and clip of the pins, so I can get them out one by one, it's a lot easier
then all at once out without damaging the board.
The other way is to use those desolder tools which heat up all pins at once,
I do have some for DIL6, DIL8, DIL16, make sure all pins are heated up
sufficient, or you will pull out the via, I use a lot solder, really add lots of solder
so all pins are "shorted", if however is possible, chances are less to screw up
the board. This method work good with SMD IC's too.

If I don't care for the board at all, ripping of useless motherboards, I use
the old gas powered open flame version, it just stinks like hell.
It's allways good to have these pulling tools on hand.

Any good tricks around for desoldering four layer throughole pcb parts?

Where there is a ground layer, the desolder weapon I am using at 370
degrees Centigrade doesn't heat the solder enough to melt it through;
what seems to happen is that the board soaks up the heat, and the parts
are only warmed.
