I have recently had my old pc blown away for myself, which prompted me
to upgrade it. All good so far. Linux I could sort out without hassle.
I've lost the knack with windoze, and so I plead for help.
I dial up (modem) and it logs on no problem. User and password get
verified, and the little modem window goes down into the corner. But I
can ping nothing - not 127.0.0.1, my nic (192.168.10.1) or anything
else. The error is
Unable to Initialise Windows Socket Interface - Error 0.
Things I have tried are: Removing the components under Device manager;
Going into windows setup and removing communications, networking and the
devices together. (I nearly lost everything getting it back together
after that); I still get the same error. It insists on installing the
modem twice and looking for a driver for it (I have none), but it works.
route print seems to indicate the route is being added. I can see
believeable numbers for the isp being added after I dial up.
I do not want to wipe, and reinstall. I can't believe any software is
so bad that this is the only way forward. But I haven't been in trouble
much with windoze, as I've more or less gon off it and am using linux
instead.
