LCD for portable application.

I am in the sketching stage for a small project requiring a small character LCD suited for handheld battery operated instrument. I need a 1-line x 8 character module that can interface with an 8-bit MCU, and can run off 3V (2 AAA alkalines). I've heard of chip-on-glass modules for portables, but most I've seen are either multi-line or for graphics. This is a small run project, so I'd like to use off-the-shelf components if I can.
