This is a 16 by 2 that I've used, it is the smallest I was able to find that 
was "Off the Shelf".  It is smaller than most of the by 1's I've seen.

Search for "Tiny LCD's" in the lists archive from February, 2003.

The problem I ran in to was the "Off the shelf" part for the ultra small types 
of LCD's, in small quantities.

You can find lots of software on the web for driving this type of LCD as well.
All based on the Hitachi 4480 controller, than is now made by Samsung.
