I did find a possible candidate at www.microelect.com per Bob Paddock's suggestion. The OPTO-0024 is a 16 x 2 chip-on-glass LCD module that can operate at 3V and will easily interface with a 3V Atmel MCU. I would have loved to find a 8 x 1 module but for rounding up the design, the OPTO-0024 will do.
Thanks both.
