Actually, I am looking for a multi-channel device.  Triacs have worked
fine for me in the past, except when they are abused.  Ideally, I would
like to find a 4 channel AC driver with fault (open circuit, short)
detection.  I have seen similar devices for driving dc devices (targeted
towards auto industry), but nothing for AC.

Thank you for sharing your pain with us. I also detest triacs; I was
answering the man's question, however. You would not drive AC with a
transistor. Use relays, ssrs, triacs, or scrs - not transistors for AC
solenoids.

Also beware of a heavy inrush current on AC solenoids when they are
energised.
