I, too, have successfully used tape over the windows of eraseable Motorola
68HC11 devices, but with one problem.
Sometimes tiny little bits of adhesive would stick to the window when the
tape was removed to erase the device. These were too small to see short of
using a magnifying glass. Apparently the bits shadowed the memory cells and
left clusters of cells unerased unless the exposure time increased by
factors of as much as 5 or more.
I finally found a sheet of the little labels made for that purpose and end
of problem.
