Diode for relay application.

What's a good diode to put across the solenoid of a 12V, 100mA relay? We have some boards that currently use the venerable 1N4148 for this purpose. Although the 1N4148 is a high-speed diode, I don't think it is intended for this application. I need to look for an alternative, preferably in a surface-mount package. Certain requirements with creepage and clearances are forcing me to put some components on the solder side of the board.   Tony
