What's a good diode to put across the solenoid of a 12V, 100mA relay? We have some boards that currently use the venerable 1N4148 for this purpose. Although the 1N4148 is a high-speed diode, I don't think it is intended for this application. I need to look for an alternative, preferably in a surface-mount package. Certain requirements with creepage and clearances are forcing me to put some components on the solder side of the board.

As Pieter said, the 1N4148 is often used for this purpose.

However, the 1N4448 is as old as the 1N4148 but with a much better forward voltage.
For <1V voltage drop the 1N4148 can pass 10 mA, the 1N4448 100 mA. Other spec's are identical.

For SMD, it depends on what case is preferred.
