What's a good diode to put across the solenoid of a 12V, 100mA relay?
The reverse voltage has to be higher than the working voltage of the relay and the forward current higher than the current through the solenoid, because exactly this current will flow in the first time through the diode. The diode don't has to be fast, but it doesn't matte if it is. So, the 1N4148 is a perfect choice, as it is also cheap. The SMT version is LL4148 75V/150mA (MiniMelf).
Other types are: BAS16 75V/250mA (SOT23) BAS21 200V/250mA (SOT23) Regards Edi
We have some boards that currently use the venerable 1N4148 for this purpose. Although the 1N4148 is a high-speed diode, I don't think it is intended for this application. I need to look for an alternative, preferably in a surface-mount package. Certain requirements with creepage and clearances are forcing me to put some components on the solder side of the board. Tony
