Hi, Chromium doesn't support "window.external.AddSearchProvider" , it supports the OpenSearch specification.
And your right, it doesn't work for slashdot.org, you can create a new bug request issue here: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/entry <http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/entry>If you visit http://www.engadget.com/ and search for something, it will appear appear in the listed Search Engines.
