Yes, removing items from the downloads bar removed them from the
download history as well... that's what I expected, and liked about
the feature.

I read some posts by some devs regarding removing the feature, and it
seemed that they felt that it was a redundant feature.  I don't feel
that way, but they're the devs. :)
