I figured it out. The root of the problem was that on a Mac, the gallery throws an obscure 'Unable to read file' error in case of any error. On Windows, the Gallery actually explains what was wrong.
In my case there were two problems. First, my description was longer than 132 characters. Second, my version number wasn't increased (deliberately, since I just wanted to update the description). I didn't know about these problems until I tried using Windows (and it was a painful experience for a Mac user but I digress). I still don't understand why the Gallery shows different error messages to Mac and Windows users but that's how it is. I hope this helps.
