Thanks for this.

One idea to stimulate contributions and prepare the ground (and test
the demand) for a fuller conference on 'Churchill and India' may be to
put forward a panel proposal to the annual conferences of the two main
research networks on South Asia in the UK and US, being held
separately in April 2008 in Edinburgh and Orlando respectively; both
are charitable bodies and the UK organisation is supported by the
national UK government body for research in the humanities and social
sciences. I am involved in both. See:-

30 March-1 April 2009, University of Edinburgh

The deadline for the submission of panel abstracts for both
conferences is 30 November 2008. I would be happy to co-author a panel
proposal abstract (2-3 paras) for either or both events, both of which
I plan to attend in any case. Arthur Herman may even be available and
willing to speak / contribute on his recent opus on Gandhi & Churchill
in Orlando, whose book - and reaction to it - helps to underline the
topicality in the theme.

It may be premature and I am not familiar with the process and
protocol with the International Churchill Conference but given the
London location in October 2009 as well as the contemporary interest
in the UK-India and US-India relationship, this may provide an ideal
opportunity for a theme on Churchill and India, building as you say on
the success of last month's Churchill conference on the theme of
"Churchill & Ireland."

I for one would be happy to help in any way I can if there is
sufficient interest though I am newcomer to the group and the
Churchill Centre, both of which I have now joined. It may also be
worth raising with Phil Reed, Director, Churchill Museum and Cabinet
War Rooms whom I may see when I attend a Churchill lecture on 21
October at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms by Hugh Lunghi.

What do you and any others think?

Thanks for the suggestions on WSC and Bangalore - also see Ramachandra
Guha, a historian based in Bangalore:-
