I'm no partisan on behalf of Andrew Roberts, little of whose work I've read so far, but I think it's wise to be wary of judgments against him by the likes of Jacob Weisberg, particularly since promulgating his pernicious but much reprinted doctrine that only racism can possibly account for Senator Obama being defeated in this year's election: http://www.slate.com/id/2198397. He is an out-and-out political polemicist (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Weisberg) -- an inescapable conclusion if you follow Slate.com regularly as I do. (Weisberg may regret, though, having described Senator McCain in his racism pitch as "a sub-par Republican nominee with a list of liabilities longer than a Joe Biden monologue," after Senator Obama chose Guess Who to be his vice-presidential candidate. He has not, as far as I know, revisited that point.) When it comes to reviewing military history, I think it's fair to say that Michael Howard on his worst day is surely a better guide than Weisberg.
