If you want to read the original, buy a reading copy. If you don't insist on a prime first edition (there were three impressions), they're not over the moon. Mark Weber carries the widest assortment: http://www.wscbooks.com --or check www.bookfinder.com The new edition was sold to a publisher BECAUSE of the scholarly editing--and will be worth the wait. The original text will be clear as before. Any added material, such as sections later added by Churchill, is indicated by typeface or color. (Note: in the 1902 abridgement, Churchill also ADDED material--this edition contains BOTH texts. Likewise the footnotes. Professor Muller has exhaustively gone through them all, providing amplified footnotes set out from the originals, explaining inconsistencies in spelling, author edits and errors (down to missing periods), and what happened to people, places and things in the century since. E.g., the Temple of Philae, which in Vol 2, pp 18-19 WSC recommends be sacrificed for a dam at Aswan (the Temple was saved). This new edition--in facsimile boards, with newly discovered drawings (including one in color) by Angus McNeill, who illustrated the first edition--will be highly desirable in its own right. The text was recopyrighted and assigned to the publisher for this purpose. The repeated delays are not the fault of Prof. Muller but the publisher. Squirrely publishers are like ants at a picnic. Take it from one who knows. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "ChurchillChat" group.
