I am currently reading Paul Johnson's excellent short biography of Churchill
and just came across a passage about this. On page 151, Johnson writes that
Churchill's papers were donated to the Chartwell Trust and then sold to Lord
Camrose of the Daily Telegraph for the purposes of a "clever legal device to
avoid the punitive taxation which would have made the memoirs pointless
financially."
