Palu Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Bonar Sitinjak said here Saturday roads to Palu city and the Palu-Donggala border area were parts of the operations` prioritized targets. The security checking operations were relaunched after local residents told police about what they called "strangers` suspicious moves" in their areas, he said. "We do this for the sake of the people`s security. These security checks are also our pro-active response to the people`s reports about the suspicious acts of terrorism," he said. A few days ago, some North Palu residents informed the police about the suspicious acts of machete-armed people in their neighborhoods. In response to the information, a group of armed policemen were deployed to the hilly areas of Tawaeli and Baiya villages in North Palu sub-district to find the suspects, Sitinjak said. But the policemen could not find the suspicious people. Instead, they only found empty huts during the sweeping operations. Police, however, appreciated the people`s collaboration for anticipating unwanted eventualities, he said. "We have asked local residents to activate the neighborhood watch system to prevent any security threat," he said. Deadly sectarian conflict and acts of terrorism which claimed many lives, hit the Central Sulawesi city of Palu a few years ago. The security checking and sweeping operations had also been launched by police in Sumatra Island following recent skirmishes between police and armed terror sustepcts in Aceh.
