If the no-sound feature is a command line switch, I have no problems with
it, as it will fall back to the current default when the option is not used.
However, if it is a preference setting, it will add to the numerous
opportunities to get lost in the user interface and forget settings
you previously made.
Say, you copy your home directory from your old machine to a new one,
where the sound actually works. Yet Cinelerra remains mute. Bug in
Cinelerra? No, you forgot that you had turned sound off, a long time
ago.
Is there room in Cinelerra's main window for a few status fields,
showing the name of the video driver and audio driver (or "off")?
The audio status field could also show various failure symbols for
"permission denied" and "no such device", with a tooltip containing
the raw error message.
This was just from the top of my head. The Linux audio and video
subsystems are fraught with so many quirks, and so much time could
be saved by making them more discoverable to the users.
