I use a 300GB Firewire drive. I bought the Macally PHR-100AF Firewire encloser for $35 from Newegg.com:

and placed a Samsung 300GB hard drive in it. I can't find the drive on Newegg anymore but it cost $90.
The best way is to buy an encloser and a hard drive and put it together yourself. It's about $75-$100 cheaper than buying one already built.
The drive is formatted as HFS+ without Journaling (aka MacOS Extended) as I need to be able to use it with the MacOS at work and school. Mandriva (my distro of choice) has read/write support for that filesystem.
I also use a SimpleDrivePS 100GB USB 2.0 hard drive for work. My boss gave it to me for my assignments and it is just fast enough for DV capture and editing. It's powered through the USB port and is also formatted as HFS+ w/o journaling. It's a great little drive.
I use the latest version of FFMPEG to convert the DV Quicktimes captured in Final Cut Pro into DV Quicktime's that Cinelerra can handle.
I would avoid products by Lacie. Many fellow students at school bought them on Apple's recommendation and they are always having issues. Samsung seems to have emerged as a top hard disk manufacturer. According to the school's IT manager, only one student has had issues with a Samsung drive.
I would also be cautious in regards to Maxtor's products. Up until recently I would have championed them as I have been a "Maxtor man" for many years and only recently have I had issues with their products, although I have to commend their warranty policy. I returned a drive for a replacement that was several years old with no questions asked.
