Hard coding the letterbox bars IS easy. The following are fundamental
cinelerra concepts so if you need to go further you will find heaps of
useful info in the manual.
Use the format dialogue to set the ratio and dimensions of video to be
rendered. Use camera (and/or projector) to zoom and position your
original video in the frame. (Click camera icon in the compositor
window and change zoom factor then drag the image within the compositor
frame to position it where you want it.) Wherever there is no image
there will be black bars.
