I gotta agree with Thorsten here that careful planning on the look&feel/art/branding is needed.
Best example of this in recent memory was the FreeBSD http://logo-contest.freebsd.org/result/640-1.png and Fedora8 art. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Interviews/MairinDuffy I'd also like to give a plug to Thorsten.
