           Summary: Multiple Label Tracks
           Product: Cinelerra
           Version: 2.1
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: Medium
         Component: User Interface
        AssignedTo: [email protected]

Cinelerra's label handling is not competitive with other programs. For one
example, audacity supports multiple label tracks and either single point or
start/end labels.

Separate label tracks are very important and supports many uses. Instead of
putting a single set of labels on the timeline, have multiple sets each in its
own track. IIRC, audacity does this. Labels could be used for a variety of
purposes. Some example tracks:
  - Scene Markers – besides being a visual reference, this would be exported
for
DVD authoring to place chapter boundaries.
  - Scene Preview markers – marks the preview frame for each chapter on DVD.
    Exported along with scene markers.
  - Scratchpad – temporary markers
  - Permanent markers – these are permanent labels used to identify
keyframes,
scenes, events, etc. in a persistant way that is not subject to change
like timestamp. This is like the difference between “goto label” in C
vs
“goto 100” in BASIC. These markers would be referred to in external
documents and corespondence instead of timestamps.
  - English Subtitles
  - FIXME – notes on things to be fixed.
  - Copyrights - information on copyrights for various tracks.
  - Characters – the characters who appear in the scene (list)

Ultimately, labels should have a start point and an optional end point, not
just a start point. Some label tracks could be configured to allow multiple
overlapping labels, which might be stacked vertically, or list type labels
(actors: john, cindy, peter) which could be displayed vertically. At the
users option, labels can be displayed as a simple triangle marker (like the
existing ones) or a wide marker (like plugin markers, now) with included text.
Width could be as long as the text or as long as end – start.

Support for subtitles/captions integrated with the timeline and label tracks,
such that if you insert/remove stuff that shifts the timeline, the subtitles
move. More specifically, these would be part of a new label track extension.
Integrated subtitles can also simplify editing as you can read the subtitles
(along with scene markers) as you scroll along the timeline to see exactly
where you are. Subtitles may wrap vertically, if desired. Here, when I am
talking about subtitles, I am talking about plain ascii text (not graphics)
with perhaps a little markup (which may be ignored by program). An external
program can take that text and generate both closed caption text data and a
video overlay.

Reproducible: Always
