Ok, I feel like I should direct people to the Pitivi-project
(<http://www.pitivi.org/>). Pitivi is a open source NLE built using
Python, Gstreamer and GTK and one of it's main goals is simplicity and
usability. A helping hand over there would be highly appreciated!

There is both a simple timeline (what you call a thumbnail-view) and a
traditional multi-track interface.
