The wierd thing is that the camera has a 50Hz mode, but it seems that
this only affects the flicker of lighting due to the mains voltage
frequency -- the resulting video files still have 30 fps.

OK, there are some interesting suggestions here, and I most certainly
will look into them.

You are right, of course. Cinelerra is an editing tool, not a format
conversion tool.

Anyway, thanks so much for your suggestions;  I'll report back if I get
any useful results.
