I stopped using clips a long time ago, mainly because the EDL grows very fast, as the the clip data seems to contain a lot of information, whose relation to the clip isn't so clear.

I also change the filename I save to as the work progresses (a simple numbering scheme) to prevent myself and Cinelerra from doing something stupid and then wipe off previous work.

Anyhow, in your situation, I would simply dissect the EDL in a text editor. Make a copy of the problematic file, and try to understand what's going on there. I would try, for the heck of it, to remove anything that didn't look directly related in the clip's description in the EDL, and then load the modified file. Cinelerra has proven pretty tolerant to ugly hacks in the EDL, as long as the XML structure is kept.
