I have tried to get an answer from this before, but still do not know how
to do it.

I would like to start with a simple file of type AVI (.avi), MOV (.mov) or
MPEG2 (.mpg), which are video files with sound included. I want to use
Cinelerra to edit the file and produce a full resolution (720X480) NTSC
video file (no compression) with the sound included so that it can be played
with most LINUX or MS Windows players, and will be recognized as a standard
video file with audio.

I can load the above input files with Cinelerra OK, but I am confused by
the output options. Some simply do not work (e.g. .dv), and others, while
they can be opened with some players, they are mostly not recognized by many
players nor can they be opened with other video editors, especially in
Windows.

I have looked at several tutorials, but they seem to be geared to producing
videos for viewing on the web (unless I am completely missing something).

I know that Cinelerra has been used to create some great videos, and the
power seems to be there. I can do some of the simple editing, but I am
stymied at creating a useable file. I am willing to use ffmpeg or something
to modify an output from Cinelerra to get a suitable format if it cannot be
created directly, but I would appreciate someone telling me exactly HOW to
do it.

Thanks for any help.

There is no such thing as a simple video file. And cinelerra is not a
simple program to use.

About rendering you may read

I usually do my rendering from Kino; just load up the .dv file(s) that you get from Cinelerra and render out to whatever. Kino has some good, apparently sane, templates for output.
