There is a LANE internal function called ARP that is not the same as 
IP ARP.  Instead, it is used for LANE components to fit one another.

The clue for layering anything is to consider the service interface 
it presents to the layer above it. LANE provides a data link service 
interface.

ATM and LANE don't really fit the traditional OSI model, although 
there are extensions that do. ATM, in the terminology of the Internal 
Organization of the Network Layer, is a subnetwork access protocol:

         Technology-independent logical networking (IP, IPX, CLNP, etc.)
         Subnetwork convergence protocol that maps logical to 
transmission system
         Subnetwork Access Protocol
             Connection ID (transient):  AAL5
             Persistent endpoint IDs: Q.2931 setup
