I also prefer OpenBSD on a cheap pc I am actually using it on a p166
with 80 meg of mem. It is great and serve's all my needs including
Intrusion Detection using snort. I make snort log to a MySQL database on
a totally different machine. I have written a howto that will walk you
step by step through setting up your firewall and just about done with
the snort portion and MySQl logging portion of it. You probably wonder
why I have it logging to MySQL there are a number of different reasons
but the main reason is with SnortReport I can see what ip addresses I am
getting hit on from and drop those at my firewall.
My HOWTO can be seen at
http://www.homenethelp.com/openbsd/bsd-firewall.asp
or at my site \
http://www.digitalrage.org/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=6
You can also visit my main page www.digitalrage.org and see my survey
for what most are using as a firewall for their home connections and
hopefully this will give you some insight.
>From my knowledge and I have no technical reason why but I have had a
Multitech, Linksys, UGate3000, and a Cisco 1605 as trial basis for my
gateway and I get greater throughput with the openbsd box. Like I said I
can't explain why maybe it is just do to the processor power over the
other boxes but I get on average 22KBs a second better. I have even
tested all these boxes on a local lan to lan connection vice going over
the internet and had a sniffer in my lab and on the lan to lan
throughput test I get 4MBs more a second with the processor barely
breaking a sweat, with the cisco 1605 running a close second but with
the processor pegged at about 72% cpu utilization on a show proc cpu.
Not trying to promote my site or anything because I only run it for
hobby sake but it would be cool if any of you would stop by the site and
participate in the Survey so we all could get a realistic view.
Hope that all helps.

Hi all,
I plan to getting one DSL line and one dynamic IP address from an ISP.
Also
I will be connecting about 10-15 stations to the DSL line. Equipments
that I
will be getting includes:DSL modem, router, and a HUB. DSL is not my
field
of expertise. My question is, how to configure a network in which all of
the
computers can use the DSL line. Also, what would be the best router's
vendor
type can I use considering to minimize costs. I appreciate any expert
feed
back on this. Thanks.
Farhn
