Symon, It depends on what version you currently have on your PIX, and if it's with (520) or without a floppy.
If you have FOS version 5.1 or later, you can do it with TFTP. If you have an older version, you must go into monitor mode as you did. You should then upgrade PDM, which you do the traditional way. I just did this a couple of days ago and it worked fine.
