Not sure, I haven't tried other fonts. I will have to figure this out in July
or August.

I don't think that is a problem.
Danai Sae-Han~(韓達耐)
and
本常問問答集~(FAQ list)~是
show no difference here with CJKhdef set to -0.07em.

I use
\CJKhdef{offset}{-.12em}
in c70bsmi.fdx, but when I use
\usepackage{CJKvert}
*without* \CJKhorz, the vertical glyphs will *also* move to the right, which
is quite ugly if you mix it with non-CJK characters.
I think hdef should only be used when you have horizontal glyphs, whether
CJKvert+CJKhorz is used, or by default when you don't have CJKvert loaded.
Why was it your intention to use hdef only when CJKvert is actually loaded?
Because I think that hdef is useful to be loaded by default as well.
And is there an option where I could define CJKhdef locally, i.e. in the Tex
file itself?
Best regards
