 Yes, that is my limitation :-( I knew that the procedure I use for TTF
 works, so that was the first way I wanted to try, for debugging
 purposes. My final goal is to incorporate the half-widths into the
 Wadalab fonts for TeXLive, after tweaking each glyph.

 Thanks for pointing out the 3rd order splines of Wadalab. I do have
 the original half-width .pfb, so I can do a Type 1 version when I am
 satisfied all is working.
