The most common cause of this, I imagine, is that your font does not
include these characters. Have you looked at your desired font (using
for instance the program fontforge) to see whether the glyphs exist?
And furthermore, if the installation of the font in TeX is done
properly. Generally I would expect an incorrectly installed font to
give visible errors, but you might look at the log file of your LaTeX
compilation to see if there is any comment. At the least, you will see
exactly which font files are used, and can examine the binary ones in
fontforge to see if the glyphs are even there.
