Hi Cheryl,

I have two favorites that I have used with great success myself. The first
is a book on how to raise your puppy right from the start. It is called
"PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL" and is written by husband and wife professional dog
trainers John Ross and Barbara McKinney. Whereas most books begin with
programs of training intended for puppies that are already 4 months of age
or older this book begins with puppy rearing from eight weeks on. This book
enables first time puppy owners to get a head start on good behavior. It
even has a chapter on how to decide what the right breed for your family is.
The chapter on crate training (ie, housebreaking) is one of the best I've
seen --- very thorough and easily understood. The puppy reared on the
Ross's methods will undoubtedly sail through puppy kindergarden classes and
graduate with highest honors (all of mine have).

The second book I love and recommend to others --- even if they already
*know* how to housetrain a dog, is "THE EVANS GUIDE FOR HOUSETRAINING YOUR
DOG" By Job Michael Evans. Job Michael Evans is a former Monk Of the now
defunct New Skete Monestary of German Sherpard training fame. He
co-authored the highly acclaimed training books by the Monks Of New Skete.
His book on housetaining is simply the best ever written (IMHO)!
I don't think there is a situation involving housebreaking that Evans
doesn't address, including punishing after the fact. I think it would be an
impossibility for someone to read this well written and highly readable book
and fail to get the job of housetraining their puppy or dog done for once
and for all. Hope this helps .....

Best,
Susan
