Patricia,

Apparently there is some confusion on your part as I am *not* the one who
asked for help with training books for new puppy owners. However, since you
addressed your remarks to me, I shall respond. I used the methods in both
the books I recommended to Cheryl and have consistently had EXCELLENT
results. Both books are based on using techniques that the dog
instinctively understands because they are derived from the ones first used
by its mother. The late Job Michael Evans was one of the foremost trainers
and writers in the dog world. As for his methods, which you don't really
seem to be able to recall in any detail, not being suitable for Cavaliers
---it may interest you to know that he has worked with many of them. In
fact, the picture on the back of "The Evans Guide To House Training" is of
Job holding a Tri-color Cavalier!
If I'd recommended a third book, without question it would have been one of
Carol Lea Bejamin's (author of "MOTHER KNOWS BEST, The Natural Way To Train
Your Dog", "SECOND HAND DOG, How To Turn Your's Into A First Rate Pet", "DOG
TRAINING FOR KIDS" and "PROBLEM DOGS"). She is a well known trainer and
multi award winning author who happens to share the same philosophy as Job
Michael Evens and John Ross (and many others) with regard to how dogs think
and the best approach to using this to our advantage in training them. Carol
Lea Bejamin, Job Michael
Evans and John Ross's methodology all stem from our developing an
understanding of dogs as pack animals and using this knowledge in our
training of them. There is nothing, including the basic 'Pavlovian' methods
you taut, that is considered as sensible and effective in its approach.

When you haven't read the books and are unfamiliar with the techniques they
endorse, why would you bother to post such an authoritative and critical
message to me for recommending them??

All the Best,
Susan
