> What do you all think of BARF feeding.
Anyone who knows nutrition would be able to tell you that a whole foods diet
is better for any animal than a highly processed food diet (dog kibble) so
there is no doubt that BARF or a cooked whole foods diet is *best* for our
dogs, but there can be risks. It does take more time too, and many people
simply don't have the extra time or are not willing to make the extra time.
The biggest risk is not getting the balance right so this is something that
should not be undertaken lightly. Either feed a prepared BARF diet or use
an established diet with nutritional analysis printed on it that is equal to
or better than kibble.
Bones are the least of your worries. You can feed whole raw bones fairly
safely. If that bothers you, grind them up or buy them ground up. If that
still bothers you, use bone meal and/or egg shells. There is always a way
regarding bone.
If bacteria bothers you, you can cook the meat (without bone of course).
Again though, don't do it unless you are willing to take lots of time to do
it right.
My hope is that someday prepared raw or partially cooked foods will be
easily available at a decent price for all dogs and that it will take the
place of the highly processed kibbles we use today. Sort of like frozen Bil
Jac in a bag at the grocery store, only it will be a bag of real
food--including meat and veggies and fruit.
In the meantime a lot of breeders are feeding solely BARF, or solely a
cooked whole foods diet, or just kibble, or a combination--kibble with lots
of fresh raw (and/or cooked) meat, veggies, fruits, etc.
