Hi, Laura,
        I agree with you on all that you wrote; the difficulty with home
prepared diets is when the owner begins to add or subtract at whim and
the NRC requirements (or nutritional balances) are not maintained.  I
cook for my dogs and use a carefully prepared diet from which we don't
vary ingredients or quantities.  Designing one's own diet requires the
equivalent of a degree in nutrition (lots to know!) and I wouldn't
attempt it without the background.
        I don't love BARF (sorry,fans....<G> but that's what makes horse
racing) as I'm worried about bacterial loads, perforations and other raw
food difficulties.  I do, however, prefer fresh food for the dogs, so
use Dr. Strombeck's diets.  Once you get into the routine of cooking, it
isn't hard to maintain.
