I also started my pups at 3 weeks of age on the litter box as at 5 weeks
they come out of the puppy pen and start learning the doggie door and how to
go outside. Usually by 5 1/2-6 weeks of age they have the doggie door down
perfectly and from that point on they do all their business outside--unless
it is raining really hard. It takes another week or so to convince them
they must do ALL their business outside--even if it is raining!
Even at 3 weeks the litter box instantly became an obsession with them. No
amount of toys would keep them away. They seemed to feel it was their duty
to empty that litter box. I had litter everywhere! All day everyday.
After a week they were still at it with no letup in sight--so I gave up. I
have never tried it again. My cleanup time was 10 times more than without
the litter box! Maybe a different litter of pups wouldn't do that--but this
one certainly did.
