You do not actually need the heat source after 3 weeks, but mine love it so
much I just leave it on til at least 5 weeks.  But as I have said before, I
cover the entire floor of the whelping nest with vet bedding.  Aside from the
slight indentation where the nest is - - it is one contiguous area.
Therefore, there is room in the corner for whatever you want, which in my
case is the tray with the wee wee pad.  If you want to use a litter box, you
can use that instead.
