Hi List,

I couldn't sleep last night so I got up and spent an hour or so reading
Clarence Little's "The Inheritance of Coat Color in Dogs," trying to
understand the genetics of Cavalier coat colors. I then spent another hour
or so creating a chart and came up with the conclusions listed below. If
any of you are interested in proofing my chart before I put it on my web
site (and, possibly, make a complete fool of myself for overlooking the
obvious) or have had experiences contrary to my conclusions, or know of a
chart already out there, please let me know.

Conclusions based on the following simplified information:

B&T = aaEESS; Tri = aaEEss; Ruby = aaeeSS; Blenheim = aaeess
Where a = tan points; E = formation of dark (black or brown over whole
coat); e = no dark pigment, leaving a clear and evenly distributed shade of
red or orange; S = Solid coat color; s = piebald spotting

1. Black is dominant over ruby and blenheim
2. Solid colors are dominant over broken (piebald) colors.
3. In order to increase the chances of producing Tri-Color, breed Tri to
Tri, Tri to Blenheim or Tri to a B&T that is out of a Tri/B&T mating.
4. B&T's are dominant over all other colors. Which makes it a easy color
to lose if you don't keep breeding them.
5. Blenheims are recessive to all other colors. Therefore are the most
common, as almost every dog carries the recessive for blenheim.
6. Ruby to ruby or to blenheim will produce ruby.

Now, for those who haven't already gone to sleep, the question I have
difficulty answering is: What do you get when breeding a pure Ruby to a
pure Tri? A very dark ruby? Any answers, genetically or practically
speaking?
