According to the information that I have the act of chewing, ripping & tearing at the food prepares the dogs digestive system to receive food. The action of chewing etc sends messages that alerts to the fact that food is on the way and gets the digestive juices activated in preparation. This is in contrast to a dog, fed food that requires no effort on their part to ingest it. It then ends up in a quickly inhaled lump in an unprepared stomach.
I think we only have to look at how a wild dog would feed, there is firstly the act of the kill or the scavenge of an already dead animal, then the ripping as they try to get to the most prized parts such as the stomach & contents and the kidney, liver etc. They then set about consuming the animal which includes a large amount of chewing, tearing & ripping until there is nothing left. This includes the majority of the bones. I can only say after having a dog that suffered continually from an irritable bowl/colitis type problem when fed kibble and is completely symptom free since he was changed to BARF 3 years ago I can only recommend the benefits.
