There is nothing wrong with strings attached and many people do
business that way. It has been my experience though that the people who I
consider genuinely interested in getting a good start will seek my advice
if and when they want to breed without being hit over the head. They
welcome all the help they can get.
I know that no matter how good the dog - I wouldn't want to be
forced to go along with someone else's wishes and it's interesting you use
a phrase like if it isn't to my advantage, why would I do it. I try to
breed good dogs because improving on what I have is a challenge. I breed
because I love having a litter in the whelping box where I sit for hours at
a time lowering my blood pressure and handling the little things while
fantasizing about all their future bests in shows (you notice I said
"fantasizing") and it gives me great pleasure to be able to place a well
bred healthy happy little puppy into the arms of a wonderful family who
will love it no matter how it turns out. I want to make the experience as
easy and as pleasant for them as I can. I sell all my pups for the same
price because in spite of all the health checks and the educated guesses as
to which one will be "the one", I can be wrong. a show prospect can turn
out to be a pet and visa versa. I would hope all my buyers fall in love
with their dog and the dog becomes more important than the ribbons it mayor
may not win and in 37+ years of breeding, very few buyers have disappointed
me. The ones that wanted to show and breed for the first time have always
wanted my advice and my help. The ones that were experienced didn't need my
advice and help but we stayed close and compared notes anyway. As for
getting a puppy back - after I've sold a puppy (for regular price) I am not
unaware of what it costs to get that pup a CH and all the health checks and
grooming equipment and general upkeep. Those owners have spent a lot of
money by the time they are ready to breed their puppy. Then they have one
of these litters with only one show prospect if that and they have to give
it up? It's a situation designed to produce bad feelings. By the way, the
AKC does not encourage co-ownerships and if you happen to co-own with a
judge, even if it is another breed, and that judge is judging somewhere -
you can't show your own dogs at the same show or even the same weekend. It
can get pretty complicated if you co-own with someone who co-owns with
someone whose sister is judging......it can be very confusing, limiting,
and difficult. I just feel differently about it than you do but there is no
right and wrong. As the saying goes, that's why there's chocolate and vanilla.
