Several years ago Cathy Gish (at least I think that was who it was) mentioned that she used Amprol in the water for her puppies. She called it Corid, but it is marketed as Amprol, the little bag of powder that poultry people mix in the drinking water of chickens to control coccidiosis. It does a better job than Albon in controlling coccidia as strains become resistant to Albon and make it ineffective. Actually, I don't think that Albon is a coccidiostat anyway. By that I mean that it doesn't kill the coccidia. I don't remember the dosage that Cathy used, but do remember that she mixed it in the drinking water of the puppies for a couple of weeks. I use it with my chickens and it does a great job, but using it with dogs is "off label" and at your own risk.
Another thing to think about is that Fort Dodge was recently licensed to sell GiardiaVac, a vaccine for giardia. And if you have dogs that have had a case of coccidia (and maybe giardia too?) they can be carriers for it and give it to every litter that they have if they are females. These protozoan parasites can live in the soil for years so your yard gets contaminated and there is nothing that you can do to get rid of it. Showing is a sure way to bring these parasites back to your home. In fact, any large gathering of dogs can mean exposure to every parasite carried by any one dog in the group. I think I have had a recuring problem with these over the past few years. Only in my puppies. I had used Flagyl tot treat and this wored well if taking a couple of courses of treament. Not all pups would be affected. I have since run out of this and am now using albon in the water for coccidia and fendbendazole 10% paste for giardia. I have dosed at 1 cc of paste per 5 pounds. Does this seem right? I have one pup who still seems to be affected. Soft pale stools, sometimes a bit of watery liquid too. They have been on the fendbendazole for 3 days this time... The pups seem fine active regular appetite playfull etc... Just the poop problem. Any suggestions??? Leah Swatko Ministik Reg.
