I use albon for coccidia (for which it is indicated) and either
metronidazole (flagyl) or pancur/fenbendazole for giardia depending on
if I KNOW I have an infection. Metronidazole is the gold standard
treatment for giardia, but it can and does cause ataxia in dogs (we had
it in two of ours/dose related, but not something I'd want to see again)
so I will test (NOT the Elisa, but the real test) for giardia before
using it. Before I'd spend money to test, I would use panacur as it is
a good dewormer as well. I tend to use panacur several times a year as
a prophylatic measure and since I've been good about that, and keeping
everything scrupulously clean (bleached and rinsed) I have not had
recrudescence of giardia. Coccidia comes and goes with puppies and I
will routinely give Albon to ALL dogs when I see it coming.
Fenbendazole and metronidazole both can cause the runs as well as cure
what ails the dogs, so be advised that you may not see firmer stool for
a while after you use it.
I personally don't put anything in my water as some water is shared and
I don't ever want to put a dog off drinking water and not know it.
