Hi everyone...just a second while I zip up my flame suit.

We here are all involved in the sport of "purbred" dogs regardless of registry.
Quoting from CKCSUSA "I realize that the purpose of breeding Cavalier King Charles
Spaniels is to attempt to bring their natural qualities to perfection in accordance
with the Breed Standard." Quoting from ACKCS " to encourage and promote quality in
the breeding of pure-bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and do all possible to
bring their natural qualities to perfection." Health, type and temperament are all
natural qualities that make up a Cavalier.

The breed standard is the blue print, is it not? Both of the standards amount to
building the same "perfect Cavalier" from a structural and "type wise" standpoint.
If one loses sight of head, eyes, and silhouette then you lose sight of the
Cavalier and all that makes it such. I can go to the pound and find a small spaniel
looking dog that may very well be healthy and have an excellent temperament...that
does not make it a Cavalier and not because the pedigree is unknown. The same
priciple applies to known pedigrees with "famous" typey dogs in them. If what comes
out of a breeding is not a step closer to the ultimate goal then it should not be
bred.

Quoting from ACKCS and CKCSUSA "fearless and sporting in character, yet at the same
time gentle and affectionate." I see way too many Cavaliers that cower with their
tails tucked between their legs in normal situations....This is not fearless nor
sporting, nor is it gentle and affectionate, no excuses. Both standards indicate
that poor temperamnet is a disqualifying fault.

Someone who gets a Cavalier be it for show or pet is generally attracted to the
breed because of how it looks and how it acts. The only way to maintain the breed
in terms of the standard (how it looks and acts) is to breed to the standard. The
standard addresses type and temperament. People who want a Cavalier want one that
looks like one, not like a Tibetan, Charlie, Cocker or a Brittany Spaniel. They
want a Cavlier to act like a Cavalier not like a Shiba Inu (independent, reserved
and sometimes dog aggressive).

Let's say we were breeding for the perfect gorgeous actor/model...so we put
together Cindy Crawford (pretty model) and Brad Pitt (decent actor and could be a
model) and we somehow get Danny DeVito. Wonderful actor but is never going to make
it as a model. Sorry but one should not keep him in a breeding program if the goal
is actor/model combination.

The same goes for bringing the natural qualities of a Cavalier to perfection. None
can be sacrificed entirely for the other or you have just lost sight of the goal.

Terrie:)
