Hi Tina:

I do not know how everyone does it. I am sure there are people out
there who circumvent the paperwork when doing it themselves. Of course,
when I receive the semen, the papers are signed by someone but I have no
way of knowing for sure what has gone on at the other end. Neither does
anyone else. Same thing as with shipping your bitch. If you aren't
there with her, you don't know how the breeding was done or to whom,
you trust the stud dog owner to do the right thing. My vet knows I have
done this for years and she observes. As to the DNA question, yes, I
DNA my dogs.

I have NEVER heard of anyone "forcing" the pipette into the bitch. It
should slide in easily and, at the least resistance, you stop. If I
heard a "popping sound" I would be hysterical!!!!! I don't even know
how many bitches of many different breeds including several Terrier
breeds, Shelties, Yorkies, Brussels Griffons, Great Danes, Goldens, etc.
that I have done for people with great success and NEVER heard that
sound or had to "force" the pipette. that is ghastly!!! So, I guess
what I am saying is that I just did regular AI's with no problems. It
is done very gently. The person I learned from has been doing it this
way for over 30 years and has never had a problem.

The reason I learned to do it myself is that I didn't like the way the
vets at that time did these things and the person who was doing them for
me felt I lived too far away from her so she taught me how. The vets
really didn't know how to collect a dog properly and furthermore, the
majority of them, unless they are specializing in repro., still do not
know. At that time, reproduction was not something they had learned in
vet school, at least not to the extent we use it. I do not do AI's
anymore for other people as it became almost a fulltime job (it seemed
like that anyway) and I already had a full time job. :)

My personal opinion is that there are a lot of vets who want AKC to
require that they sign the papers and do the work so AKC complies How
in the world does a vet know which dog or bitch you are using? Only the
breeder knows that. So, if you have to use a vet for the purpose of
identification, I think it's totally silly.
