I always preferred having it put on an airplane, picking it up several
hours later and using it immediately. If your slides, progesterone,
LHS, or whatever else you are using is accurate, it should only take one
 breeding. >>

Hi Carol:

Just a question, but what do you do about the form that both vets must
sign when you collect, inspect semen, mix it with extender and pack and ship.
Do you sign it yourselves or do you just forget about it since there are not
vets involved and both stud dog owner and bitch owner are doing the
procedures? Do you DNA your dogs? I've worked in infertility (human) and
can definitely do the bitch smears, collection of the dog etc but I thought
fresh chilled it was mandatory for the vet collecting the dog to sign the AKC
form and verify that infact it is the dog you say it is, as well as make sure
that the dog is DNA. I've been using fresh chilled for years, both sending
and receiving so if this is not the case, I've been paying for something I
could very well do myself.

As far as the pricing for a fresh chilled breeding, costs are specific to the
vet or repro center. My vet charges 75.00 for each kit which and we usually
send two samples and charges $75.00 for each collection. So approximately
$300.00 for kits, collection and shipping. Now when I receive semen, I
usually do a regular AI. There really is no reason to do a transcervical or
surgical AI, unless there is a problem with conception or other reproductive
problem ie previous treated pyo or stricture. Many breeders are doing
transcervical with or without fibro-optics, however, I have researched and
observed the procedure ( my repro vet is certified to do this) and her
opinion is that it can be very dangerous and does not recommend it. It is
the new thing now but has been around for many years. It has been done on
cattle and horses for years. When the vet goes throught the cervix, into
the uterine body, the procedure calls for them to push the pipette with force
into the horn . At this point, even with fibro-optics you are working in the
blind. As you force the pipette, here a pop and then feel a grating sound.
My vet has seen and repaired some really serious situations from this
procedure. On ultrasound, she has seen perforation of the horn which
increases in size as the whelps grow. This can lead to an ectopic fetus,
infection and abortion or resorption of the fetuses. For these reasons, if I
had a difficult breeding or timing factor, I would use the surgical
insemination. The risk of the anesthesia vs the risk of destroying my
bitches reproductive system and/or death from septicemia, I guess I'd opt
for the anesthesia. I do not use antibiotics on my bitches. The extender
has an antibiotic in it anyway.

Now the pricing for my vet to do the timing. Progestrones are about $25.00
each and the LH is$35.00. The intial vaginal scope and exam is $80.00. A
smear is about $20.00. Each insemination is $75.00. So lets do the math--

    Kits- 75.00 x 2= 150.00
    Collection 75.00 x 2= 150.00
        & Shipping
    Int Exam/Scope 80.00
    Smear 25.00
    Progesterone 25.00 x 4= 100.00
    LH 350.00 35.00
    Reg. Inseminat. 75.00 x 2= 100.00
                                        _______
                                         640.00
              or _______
     Surgical Insemint 600.00 to 800.00 1,140 or 1,340.00.

On top of all this is you stud fee. Having said all this, I still prefer
this to shipping my bitches. Of course, you can still fly out with your
bitch under the seat.
So sorry for the length of this post but couldn't figure out how to explain
all this in short form.

Best,
Tina
