Myra,
I applaud your wish to eliminate HD and other problems in the next 10 years.
I should point out, however, in the event that you have missed it, that the German
Shepherd people have been testing for more than 30 years and haven't eliminated it
yet. And, unless you test everything you breed (after age 2, of course), you really
won't know if you've "eliminated it" anyway.
Four generations of dogs that were OFA good can still produce bad hips...
and what about litters of 7 with one Fair and 6 Dysplastic?
Also, I'm appalled that your friends criticized you for trying to talk about
the problems you encountered. I can certainly understand that you wouldn't want to
bring things up on email lists, but friends???
I'd sure like to know at what age those puppies were determined to have luxating
patellas.....
And eyes are easy, yes. Even without CERF!!!
MVD - I don't think so.
Given the dogs of yours that I'm familiar with, you shouldn't have to worry too
much about type...but is that why you chose them, or did you look first to see if
they had all their certifications. And when a dog doesn't pass some test or other,
do you keep it, or do you do as Winnie says "breeders" do, and get rid of it?
Peggy
