We recently neutered two of our puppies at 12 weeks of age. By that time, 90% of vaccinations are successful. However, we do not as a general rule neuter puppies. These two had small scrotal hernias that I wanted to have fixed before they were placed in new homes. I wanted my vet to do the surgeries and it seemed foolish to correct the hernia and not neuter them at the same time.
As a general rule, I believe that 6 months is the best age to neuter/spay. However, I do see the benefits of early neuter/spay, particularly with shelter animals. Regardless of the drawbacks, it has been the only effective way to reduce the number of puppies and kittens that are turned over to the shelters. (It does no good for a family to adopt from the shelter and then bring litter after litter back to that same shelter because the family did not neuter their new pet nor control it's breedings. Sad to say, but this scenario happens all to often.)
