There is some truth to this--if the dog is bred very early. When two dogs are mated at optimum time--there tends to be more males than females--very early, more females than males. But when bred early enough for this to be true, the litter size tends to be smaller as well. In a study of 49,650 German Shepherds born it was found that in litters of 3 puppies or less, there were more females born. In litters of 4 puppies or more, there were more and more males vs. females, the larger the litter. In litters of 14 to 15 puppies--there were nearly twice as many males as females. Optimum mating time usually means more males. Another interesting note of 1440 puppies born is that during months of longer days (April-Sept) there were 116 males born to every 100 females. During the shorter days (Oct-Mar) there were 143 males born to every 100 females. These were dogs who lived in kennels with no artificial heat. It may not apply to dogs kept in houses/heated quarters.
